Read and Write: Introduction to using Strobes

When it comes to professional studio lighting, people either buy a kit that comes with flash head and a power pack or a monolight kit. When all the controls are on the power pack it makes it easier for you because you can change the settings of multiple flash heads at once.

Monolights are more complicated because all the controls are built into the light so you have to adjust every single one, one at a time. Power packs can also flash faster than monolights so if you are trying to capture fast movement then the power pack is more helpful.

The most common types of light modifers are umbrellas and softboxes. Reflecting umbrellas produce a diffused and soft light due to the larger size of the reflecting surface. They are mounted in such a way that the strobe light is actually facing away from the subject or model. Light flies from the strobe head hitting the inside of the umbrella and then bounces back towards the subject.

Some important things that I got out of reading this are what type of lights you can use depending on what you’re shooting and I learned the purpose of things like the light modifiers.
